# Representative Bernie Sanders votes against the Iraq war authorization

Date: 2002

On 10 October 2002 the U.S. House passed the authorization for the use of military force against Iraq by 296 votes to 133. Representative [Bernie Sanders](/people/bernie-sanders) of Vermont opposed it, arguing that rather than going to war the United States should work with the international community on a thorough search for weapons in Iraq.
