# Sarkozy convicted over illegal 2012 campaign financing

On 30 September 2021 a Paris court convicted former president [Nicolas Sarkozy](/people/nicolas-sarkozy) of illegally financing his unsuccessful 2012 re-election campaign, in the Bygmalion case. He received a one-year sentence that the court allowed him to serve at home with an electronic tag. Sarkozy, who denied wrongdoing, appealed, which suspended enforcement.
