# Les Mots is published as Sartre’s autobiography of reading and writing

Date: 1964

## The fact

In 1963–64 [Jean-Paul Sartre](/people/jean-paul-sartre) published Les Mots, an autobiography of a child made by print, issued by Gallimard and cited in the Swedish Academy’s 1964 literature honour he then refused. It is a teaching of how words capture a life, not a ministry circular. The Academy’s reading is reception, not this title page.

## Context

He was already a political brand. Les Mots returned to a child in a grandfather’s library. Sharing print with Gallimard does not erase the author. Do not collapse the book into the refusal, or the refusal into the book. Later school editions are not 1964 as a new act.

Later competitions, monuments, translations, UNESCO listings, museums, and adaptations are not converted into extra lifetime acts.

## Evidence and sources

Gallimard at https://www.gallimard.fr/ is the official publisher of Les Mots. Nobel facts page at https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/literature/1964/sartre/facts/ independently ties the 1964 honour to the autobiographical work among others, without making the prize Sartre’s accepted instrument.

Official or archival record: Éditions Gallimard — portal (https://www.gallimard.fr/; Éditions Gallimard).

## Significance

Education path, modest weight. High confidence on publication at the 1963–64 turn.

Confidence is stated on the impact path, not hidden in adjectives. Les Mots is not the 22 October 1964 refusal. Mixed effects of Les Mots is published as Sartre’s autobiography of reading and writing are separate paths.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Les Mots appeared as Sartre’s book in 1963–64. Not established: that the Nobel citation is his act of acceptance. Contribution is recorded as He authored Les Mots (1963/64). Gallimard printed it; the Nobel citation leaned on it. The refusal of the prize is a separate 22 October act. The impact note is A public autobiography of how books make a child is a modest education path, not the Nobel as a twin. The dated heading stays Les Mots is published as Sartre’s autobiography of reading and writing on 1964-01-01, not a later statue, UNESCO listing, or school film. Printers, unnamed clerks, and later editors may appear in the same file without becoming this instrument. Later competitions, monuments, and adaptations are refused as extra lifetime acts of this person on this date.

Shared responsibility is part of Les Mots is published as Sartre’s autobiography of reading and writing. Naming Jean-Paul Sartre does not delete co-authors, institutions, or later transmitters. The lag from 1964-01-01 to any measured indicator is not treated as zero. Alternative explanations — weather, other armies, later statutes, or independent cultural change — remain live where the sources do not close them.

The contribution type is direct. The attached driver is edu-[digital-learning-access](/drivers/edu-digital-learning-access). The welfare reading used in this dossier is improving. That reading is an impact-path choice, not a property stored on the Fact itself.
