# Bipartisan Safer Communities Act signed into law

Date: 2022

[President Joe Biden](/people/env-person-joe-biden) signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act into law on 25 June 2022, the first major federal gun-safety legislation in nearly three decades. The bill was negotiated after the May 2022 Uvalde school shooting by a bipartisan group of senators led by [Chris Murphy](/people/chris-murphy) (D-CT) with John Cornyn (R-TX), [Kyrsten Sinema](/people/kyrsten-sinema) (D-AZ) and [Thom Tillis](/people/thom-tillis) (R-NC). It funded state red-flag laws, expanded background checks for buyers under 21, narrowed the domestic-violence 'boyfriend loophole,' criminalized gun trafficking and straw purchases, and provided billions for mental-health and school-safety programs.
