# Shakespeare becomes a housekeeper of the Blackfriars indoor theatre

Date: 1608

## The fact

In 1608 the King's Men occupied the Blackfriars indoor theatre. [Shakespeare](/people/william-shakespeare) is listed among the housekeepers of that hall. This is a completed property-and-company arrangement, after years in which the Burbages had held the space and leased it to boys' companies.

## Context

Blackfriars is a former monastic precinct, a legal liberty. Indoor playing meant candles, higher prices, and a different crowd than the Globe yard. The 1596 petition of Blackfriars residents against a playhouse is an earlier local conflict; by 1608 the King's Men used the hall. Shakespeare did not invent indoor theatre.

## Evidence and sources

Sharer and housekeeper documents in Shakespeare Documented, and Globe/Birthplace narratives, establish the 1608 occupation and Shakespeare's share. They do not establish nightly receipts. Wikipedia is not used as a causal source.

## Significance

Winter indoor playing is a seasonal access expansion. It is also a price expansion: hall audiences paid more. Both are real.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1608 Blackfriars housekeeper share. Not established: that indoor playing was more 'elite' in every seat; that Globe audiences disappeared in winter. Confidence high on the share, medium on audience composition.

The event remains dated 1608-08-09. Shakespeare's documented role is: He took a share in the indoor Blackfriars syndicate used by the King's Men for winter playing. Indoor hall playing extended the season when the open Globe was impractical, increasing access for paying audiences. Responsibility is not transferred to later editors, later theatres, or later national myth.
