# Sharon government carries out Gaza disengagement

In August 2005 the government of [Ariel Sharon](/people/ariel-sharon) removed all Israeli settlements in the Gaza Strip, along with four in the northern West Bank, under its disengagement plan. Some of the roughly 8,000 Jewish settlers living in Gaza had vowed to defy the prime minister's plan and refuse to leave.
