# Jack Smith appointed chief prosecutor of the Kosovo Specialist Prosecutor's Office

In May 2018 [Jack Smith](/people/jack-smith), a U.S. prosecutor experienced in political and international criminal cases, was appointed Specialist Prosecutor for the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague after an EU-run selection process. The court handles crimes from during and after the 1998–1999 Kosovo war, and his office later indicted former Kosovo President [Hashim Thaçi](/people/hashim-thaci).
