# Soviet authorities cut land access to West Berlin Date: 1948 ## The fact On 24 June 1948 Soviet authorities halted land and water traffic between the western zones and West Berlin, after the 18 June western currency reform in the Trizone. The blockade lasted until 12 May 1949. The western airlift is a separate Fact of Allied logistics. Later speeches, the cult, and measured deaths are not mixed into this Fact. ## Context Stalin’s aim was to prevent a separate West German state or to force the West out of Berlin. The 1949 Federal Republic and the GDR followed. Those state-foundings are later Facts. Shared responsibility with the Politburo, Sovnarkom, NKVD, front commands, and later the State Defence Committee is part of the record.
