# Stalin authorizes Kim Il-sung’s invasion of South Korea

## The fact

In spring 1950, after earlier refusals, [Stalin](/people/joseph-stalin) authorized Kim Il-sung to attack south. Cipher cables published from Russian archives, including the 14 April 1950 period, record Moscow’s consent and conditions. The invasion began on 25 June 1950.

Later speeches, the cult, and measured deaths are not mixed into this Fact.

## Context

Mao’s later intervention and Truman’s UN police action are separate Facts. Soviet pilots later flew in China. Stalin’s 1953 death preceded the armistice; that is not a peace treaty signed by him.

Shared responsibility with the Politburo, Sovnarkom, NKVD, front commands, and later the State Defence Committee is part of the record. Sharing is not a reason to drop Stalin’s signature or chairmanship, and it is not a reason to treat every local killing as a personal handwriting sample.

## Evidence and sources

The Wilson Center’s Cold War International History Project publishes the Stalin-Kim-Mao cables. Britannica and Stueck independently reconstruct the authorization. The 25 June attack is not in dispute.

Where later commissions publish death or deportee estimates, those estimates are attributed to the commission, not invented as a Factrail original count.
