# EU AI Act Enters into Force

Date: 2024

On 1 August 2024 the [EU Artificial Intelligence Act](/drivers/eu-artificial-intelligence-act) formally entered into force, starting the clock on a phased implementation timeline managed under Commissioner [Thierry Breton](/people/thierry-breton) during his term. Prohibited practices became enforceable in February 2025, general-purpose-AI transparency obligations from August 2025, and most high-risk-system requirements by August 2026. Entry into force established the first binding, EU-wide legal framework for AI and a likely global reference point.
