# EU Fines Apple EUR 1.8 Billion Over App Store Music-Streaming Rules

Date: 2024

On 4 March 2024 the European Commission, under competition chief [Margrethe Vestager](/people/tech-margrethe-vestager), fined Apple about EUR 1.8 billion for abusing its dominant position in distributing music-streaming apps. The Commission found Apple's 'anti-steering' rules barred developers such as Spotify from telling users about cheaper subscription options outside the App Store. It was the first EU antitrust fine against Apple and ordered the company to remove the steering restrictions. Apple appealed the decision.
