# EU Designates First Six Digital Markets Act Gatekeepers

Date: 2023

On 6 September 2023 the European Commission designated the first six 'gatekeepers' under the Digital Markets Act, Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, ByteDance, Meta and Microsoft, covering 22 core platform services. The designation triggered a six-month compliance countdown to March 2024, by which the firms had to open up to interoperability, end self-preferencing and stop other conduct that locks in users. It was the operational starting gun for the EU's flagship rulebook constraining dominant-platform power.
