In December 2024 [Henna Virkkunen](/people/henna-virkkunen) became the European Commission's Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, consolidating responsibility for the EU's digital strategy: cybersecurity, AI, digital infrastructure and the protection of democratic institutions. Her mandate, set out in a mission letter, prioritises strengthening Europe's digital independence, securing critical infrastructure, closing the digital-skills gap and boosting investment in frontier technologies such as quantum. The appointment centralised oversight of the EU's connectivity and digital-rules agenda for the 2024-2029 term.
