# EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Becomes Applicable

Date: 2018

Adopted on 14 April 2016 and applicable from 25 May 2018, the GDPR established EU-wide data-protection rights (access, rectification, erasure), strict processing principles, and fines up to EUR 20 million or 4% of global turnover. It set a de facto global standard, inspiring data-protection laws worldwide.
