# Tirana student protest at Education Ministry turns violent; 23 arrested

On 13 October 2026, a student protest outside Albania's Education Ministry in Tirana turned violent. Al Jazeera reported that demonstrators threw bricks, concrete blocks, fireworks and Molotov cocktails at the building and at police, who responded with tear gas and water cannon. Police said 23 people were arrested and that six officers and a female journalist were injured. Student organizers said they were protesting university conditions, the cost of higher education, limited financial support and poor employment prospects after graduation; many also demanded the resignation of Prime Minister [Edi Rama](/people/edi-rama). Deputy Prime Minister Albana Kociu condemned the attacks on institutions and police.
