# Tower letters and interrogatories create a dated state file of More’s private conscience

## The fact

In 1534–35 Tower interrogatories and More’s prison letters created a dated state file of his private conscience and family messages. The instrument is that data-capture file, not the scaffold as a twin.

## Context

Prison paper is surveillance. TNA catalogues and HRP independently frame the Tower letter-and-interrogatory archive. Later saintly editions are carriers.

[Thomas More](/people/thomas-more)’s documented role is bounded by other offices and collaborators named in the sources below. Sharing a field with them is not a reason to drop a documented act, and it is not a reason to assign later consequences done in the name after death.

Conventional years are 1478–1535. Surviving public files are later parliamentary biographies, HRP pages, Yale Essential More, and encyclopedias. More did not typeset those later pages. Posthumous canonisation is reception, not a lifetime act.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Tower interrogatories and letters survive as a state-and-family paper file. Not established: that every private thought was captured.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
