# Turkey adopts social-media platform obligations

Date: 2020

Turkey’s parliament adopted Law No. 7253 at the end of July 2020, and the law was published in the Official Gazette on 31 July. The measure amended Internet Law No. 5651 and created a legal category for social-network providers. ARTICLE 19’s analysis records requirements affecting large foreign platforms, including appointment of a representative in Turkey, responses to individual applications and a sanctions structure for non-compliance; it also notes the addition of content-removal authority alongside access blocking. Contemporary legal summaries identify Official Gazette No. 31202 and describe further obligations connected to data and platform compliance. The fact is not framed as though every platform-regulation requirement is censorship. The concern is limited to provisions that increase state leverage over content availability or create escalating pressure on platforms to comply with removal and blocking demands. That distinction matters because user-redress and representation obligations can have legitimate regulatory purposes, while broad or weakly safeguarded removal powers can narrow online expression.
