# Turchynov becomes acting President of Ukraine

Date: 2014

On 23 February 2014, after [Viktor Yanukovych](/people/viktor-yanukovych) fled Kyiv, the [Verkhovna Rada](/organizations/verkhovna-rada) assigned the duties of president to its newly elected speaker [Oleksandr Turchynov](/people/oleksandr-turchynov). He gave MPs until that Tuesday to form a unity government and signalled renewed talks with the EU. He served until [Petro Poroshenko](/people/petro-poroshenko)'s inauguration in June 2014.
