# State action against the Central American University deepened control of higher education

Date: 2023

The Central American University, a Jesuit institution, became a central target in the government's higher-education crackdown. The IACHR and its special rapporteurships documented harassment and interference connected to the university's support for students involved in the 2018 protests and placed the action within a pattern in which numerous universities had already lost legal status. The Commission described the measures as arbitrary interference with academic freedom.
