# UK sanctions Roman Abramovich and freezes his assets

On 10 March 2022 the UK government designated Chelsea FC owner [Roman Abramovich](/people/roman-abramovich) among seven oligarchs placed under an asset freeze and travel ban, citing Kremlin links after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Because the freeze also covered entities he controlled, the club itself fell under sanctions, and the Treasury issued a special licence allowing it to keep operating.
