# UK sanctions Patriarch Kirill

Date: 2022

On 16 June 2022 the UK government placed [Patriarch Kirill](/people/patriarch-kirill) on its Russia sanctions list over his support for the invasion of Ukraine. Earlier that month the EU had dropped him from its own package after Hungary's representative refused to approve the measures unless the patriarch's name was removed, briefly putting the entire list in doubt.
