# Edison promotes poured-concrete houses as a mass housing scheme

Date: 1906

## The fact

In the 1900s [Edison](/people/thomas-edison) publicised and patented methods for pouring a house in a single concrete operation, promising cheap fireproof dwellings. Few were built. The scheme is a dated housing-industrial instrument that failed as mass policy.

## Context

Urban fire and tenement reform were real. A patented mould is not a housing authority. Henry Ford later admired Edison; that admiration is not a housing series.

Thomas Edison is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

NPS interpretation and Henry Ford museum Edison pages independently describe the concrete-house promotion.

Official or archival record: Thomas Edison National Historical Park — history (https://www.nps.gov/edis/learn/historyculture/index.htm; U.S. National Park Service).

## Significance

Housing-access miss. High confidence that the promotion occurred and did not scale.

A failed housing product is not a slum clearance. Do not invent a body count of unbuilt walls.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Edison concrete-house patents and publicity in the 1900s with little mass adoption. Not established: a nationwide housing harm uniquely caused by the moulds.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
