# Edison systems standardise on low-voltage direct current for urban distribution

Date: 1883

## The fact

[Edison](/people/thomas-edison)’s commercial lighting system of the early 1880s distributed low-voltage direct current from neighbourhood stations. The engineering choice is a dated standard, later displaced for bulk transmission by alternating current.

## Context

DC was easier to meter and to run with the lamps he had. It was expensive to send far. Westinghouse/Tesla AC is the rival path. This Fact stores lock-in costs, not a claim that DC never worked on Pearl Street.

Thomas Edison is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

ETHW Pearl Street and Edison system essays independently describe DC radius limits.

Official or archival record: ETHW — Pearl Street Station (https://ethw.org/Pearl_Street_Station; IEEE / ETHW).

## Significance

High confidence on the DC standard; medium on a dollar series of conversion costs.

HVDC in the twenty-first century is not this 1883 franchise. Do not conflate.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Edison commercial systems of the 1880s were DC neighbourhood stations. Not established: that Edison uniquely delayed all AC, or that DC has no later high-voltage uses.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
