# Congress awards Edison a Congressional Gold Medal

Date: 1928

## The fact

On 29 May 1928 Congress awarded [Thomas Edison](/people/thomas-edison) a Congressional Gold Medal for his work in lighting and phonographs. It is a legislative honour, not a new machine.

## Context

By 1928 GE, Westinghouse, and a generation of assistants had already built the industry. A medal can recognise and can flatten.

Thomas Edison is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Congressional medal listings via Edison Papers/Britannica independently date the 1928 award.

Official or archival record: Thomas A. Edison Papers (https://edison.rutgers.edu/; Rutgers University).

## Significance

National-memory path. High confidence on the medal; low on welfare coefficients.

A medal is not a kilowatt. Do not treat it as a second Pearl Street.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1928 Congressional Gold Medal to Edison. Not established: that the medal measured lighting’s net welfare.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
