# William Kemmler is executed in New York’s first electric chair amid Edison’s AC campaign

Date: 1890

## The fact

On 6 August 1890 New York executed William Kemmler at Auburn with the first electric chair. [Edison](/people/thomas-edison)-aligned publicity had promoted alternating current for the apparatus to brand Westinghouse’s system as the current of death.

## Context

The state chose electrocution as a supposed humane replacement for hanging. The first execution was botched and prolonged. This Fact is the execution plus the documented industrial advocacy, not a claim that Edison threw the switch.

Thomas Edison is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Smithsonian Magazine and ETHW independently reconstruct the chair’s origin in the current war. Court and prison records are the state’s official side.

## Significance

Justice and rights path. High confidence on the date; medium on Edison’s causal share versus the legislature.

Indirect contribution is the honest type. Do not write a hanging judge in Menlo Park.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Kemmler executed 6 August 1890; Edison camp advocated AC for the chair. Not established: that Edison designed the chair as a state officer, or that electrocution was ‘his invention’ in a statutory sense.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
