# Edison files U.S. patents covering the Kinetoscope moving-picture peep-show

Date: 1891

## The fact

In 1891 [Edison](/people/thomas-edison)’s laboratory filed United States patents for the Kinetograph camera and Kinetoscope viewer. Public parlours followed in 1894. Dickson’s employment is part of the contribution, not a reason to drop Edison’s name on the patents.

patents covering the Kinetoscope moving-picture peep-show (1891-08-24).

## Context

Muybridge, Marey and others already analysed motion. Edison’s commercial peep-show is a business instrument. Projection (Vitascope, 1896) is a later Fact. French and other inventors contest priority of cinema as such.

Thomas Edison is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Library of Congress Edison motion-picture essays and Britannica independently date the 1891 filings and 1894 parlours.

Official or archival record: Edison Company Motion Pictures and Sound Recordings (https://www.loc.gov/collections/edison-company-motion-pictures-and-sound-recordings/; Library of Congress).

## Significance

Cultural-access path. High confidence on the U.S. patents and parlours; medium on ‘inventing cinema’.

Dickson is named. Lumière projection is a different instrument.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1891 Kinetoscope/Kinetograph patents from Edison’s lab; 1894 parlours. Not established: that Edison uniquely invented motion pictures.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
