# Edison opens the Menlo Park laboratory as a paid invention factory

Date: 1876

## The fact

In 1876 [Edison](/people/thomas-edison) established a laboratory at Menlo Park, New Jersey, organised to produce patentable devices on a payroll rather than as a lone workshop. It is routinely described as an early industrial research laboratory.

## Context

Investors wanted a stream of telegraph and later lighting patents. Charles Batchelor, John Kruesi, Francis Upton and others were employees, not footnotes. The laboratory is an organisation Fact, not a magic portrait.

Thomas Edison is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

NPS Edison NHP and IEEE/ETHW independently date the Menlo Park shop. Rutgers papers document payroll and notebooks.

Official or archival record: Thomas Edison National Historical Park — history (https://www.nps.gov/edis/learn/historyculture/index.htm; U.S. National Park Service).

## Significance

Industrial-policy path: invention as a managed factory. High confidence on the laboratory’s existence and purpose.

A payroll of assistants is the mechanism. Do not write a wizard.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Menlo Park laboratory from 1876 under Edison’s direction. Not established: that it was the unique ‘first lab’ in all industrial history, or that every later corporate lab is his.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
