# The Motion Picture Patents Company is formed around Edison’s film patents

## The fact

On 18 December 1908 the Motion Picture Patents Company was incorporated, pooling [Edison](/people/thomas-edison) and other film patents and contracting with Eastman for film stock. It sought to license exhibition and freeze out independents.

## Context

Independent producers moved toward Hollywood in part to escape the trust. Federal antitrust action later dissolved the combination (1915–18). This Fact is the 1908 formation, not the later decree.

Thomas Edison is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
