# Edison chairs the Naval Consulting Board in wartime mobilisation

Date: 1915

## The fact

In 1915 the United States Navy established a Naval Consulting Board with [Edison](/people/thomas-edison) as president, to screen inventions and advise on industrial research in the World War. It is an advisory organisation, not a combat command.

## Context

Submarine warfare and industrial munitions made civilian laboratories politically useful. Edison’s own later rumoured ‘superweapon’ claims are not this Fact. The board’s minutes and Navy files are.

Thomas Edison is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Naval History and Heritage Command’s Edison file and IEEE/ETHW independently date the 1915 board.

Official or archival record: Naval History and Heritage Command — Edison file (https://www.history.navy.mil/research/library/research-guides/z-files/zb-files/zb-files-e/edison-thomas-alva.html; U.S. Navy).

## Significance

Security-industrial path. High confidence on the chairmanship; medium on any particular device adopted.

An advisory chair is not an admiral. Keep the limit.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Edison chaired the 1915 Naval Consulting Board. Not established: that he designed sonar, or that the board won the Atlantic.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
