# Edison pours capital into the failed Ogden iron-ore milling venture

Date: 1892

## The fact

In the 1890s [Edison](/people/thomas-edison) built and ran a magnetic iron-ore concentrating plant at Ogden (Edison), New Jersey. It did not compete with Mesabi ore. The works closed after heavy losses. This Fact stores the extractive venture, not a personality of stubbornness.

## Context

Low-grade New Jersey ore plus Edison’s crushing and magnetic separation looked like a way to feed eastern steel. Minnesota ore and transport costs won. Labour and landscape damage at the site are part of the independent park and papers record.

Thomas Edison is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

NPS site histories and Rutgers Edison Papers independently document the ore-milling failure.

Official or archival record: Thomas Edison National Historical Park — history (https://www.nps.gov/edis/learn/historyculture/index.htm; U.S. National Park Service).

## Significance

Extractive-labour and wasted-capital path. High confidence on the failure; medium on any wage series.

A failed mill is a Fact. Do not launder it into a cute anecdote of persistence.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Edison ore-milling works existed and failed commercially. Not established: a unique injury count, or that the mill caused a national steel shortage.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
