# Edison companies conduct extensive lamp and system patent litigation

Date: 1885

## The fact

Through the 1880s [Edison](/people/thomas-edison)’s companies litigated incandescent-lamp and system patents against domestic and foreign rivals, including Swan-related British arrangements and U.S. competitors. The files are court and company instruments.

## Context

Patent enforcement can protect an investment and can freeze competitors. Both happened. Later GE’s patent position grows from this thicket plus the 1892 merger.

Thomas Edison is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Edison Papers litigation files and Britannica’s Edison/GE narrative independently describe the lamp suits.

Official or archival record: Thomas A. Edison Papers (https://edison.rutgers.edu/; Rutgers University).

## Significance

Legal-industrial path. High confidence that systematic litigation occurred.

A lawsuit is not a filament. Store the docket as its own instrument.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Edison companies waged lamp and system patent suits in the 1880s. Not established: that every later electronics patent war is this docket.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
