# Edison Portland Cement Company is organised around kiln and mill patents

Date: 1899

## The fact

Around 1899 [Edison](/people/thomas-edison) organised Portland cement production using long rotary kilns, aiming at cheaper concrete for houses, stadiums and industrial floors. Yankee Stadium’s later use of Edison cement is a reception, not this organisation date.

## Context

Ore-milling machinery was reused. Concrete houses were promoted and mostly failed as a mass product. Cement as a commodity had more success than the poured house scheme.

Thomas Edison is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

NPS industrial-history pages and IEEE/ETHW independently describe Edison cement work.

Official or archival record: Thomas Edison National Historical Park — history (https://www.nps.gov/edis/learn/historyculture/index.htm; U.S. National Park Service).

## Significance

Industrial-materials path. High confidence on the company; medium on housing-welfare effects.

A kiln is not a housing ministry. Keep the poured-house scheme on a separate worsening row if stored.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Edison Portland Cement Company and long-kiln work around 1899–. Not established: that Edison invented Portland cement, or that a concrete-house America followed.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
