# Edison develops the quadruplex telegraph for Western Union traffic

Date: 1874

## The fact

In 1874 [Edison](/people/thomas-edison)’s quadruplex telegraph arrangement allowed two messages in each direction on a single wire. Western Union bought and used the method. It is an industrial communications instrument, not a public-education statute.

## Context

Telegraph capacity was a bottleneck and a rent. Western Union’s purchase is the commercial mechanism. Joseph Stearns’s duplex is a predecessor. Sharing with the company does not erase Edison’s named role in the 1874 files.

Thomas Edison is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Rutgers Edison Papers and IEEE/ETHW independently describe the 1874 quadruplex sale. Wikipedia is not used as a source.

Official or archival record: Thomas A. Edison Papers (https://edison.rutgers.edu/; Rutgers University).

## Significance

Knowledge-access path through cheaper text transmission. High confidence on the method and sale.

A telegraph multiplex is not a school. Keep the lag.

## What is established and what is not

Established: a 1874 quadruplex method associated with Edison and Western Union. Not established: a literacy-rate series caused by this circuit.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
