# Edison cedes day-to-day control of Thomas A. Edison, Inc.

Date: 1926

## The fact

In 1926 [Edison](/people/thomas-edison) withdrew from day-to-day management of Thomas A. Edison, Incorporated, remaining a symbolic principal. It is a private succession, stored because the dossier otherwise treats him as perpetual hands-on inventor-manager.

Edison, Inc. (1926-01-01).

## Context

Charles Edison and professional staff ran operations. Light’s Golden Jubilee still used the founder’s body in 1929. Those are different instruments.

Thomas Edison is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

NPS biographical chronology and Britannica independently note the 1926 withdrawal from operations.

Official or archival record: Thomas Edison National Historical Park — history (https://www.nps.gov/edis/learn/historyculture/index.htm; U.S. National Park Service).

## Significance

Founder-control path. High confidence on the management change; low on public welfare.

A private retirement is not a constitution. Keep the weight low.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1926 operational step-back at Thomas A. Edison, Inc. Not established: a democratic reform, or that he ceased to be used as a national emblem.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
