# Edison markets an alkaline storage battery for vehicles and industry

Date: 1901

## The fact

Around 1901 [Edison](/people/thomas-edison) introduced a nickel-iron alkaline storage battery aimed at electric vehicles, lighting and industrial standby. Durability was the selling point; energy density and cost limited mass adoption versus gasoline.

## Context

Electric hansom cabs and delivery wagons existed. [Ford](/people/doug-ford)’s gasoline Model T later dominated. The battery is a dated product line, not a 21st-century lithium cell.

Thomas Edison is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

NPS laboratory interpretation and IEEE/ETHW independently describe the Edison battery work.

Official or archival record: Thomas Edison National Historical Park — history (https://www.nps.gov/edis/learn/historyculture/index.htm; U.S. National Park Service).

## Significance

High confidence on the product; medium on fleet-scale effects.

A rugged cell is not a climate statute. Keep the chemistry distinct.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Edison alkaline storage battery commercialised in the early 1900s. Not established: that it displaced petroleum, or that it is the parent of lithium-ion chemistry.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
