# Edison laboratories work on wartime chemicals and naval detection devices

Date: 1917

## The fact

After April 1917 [Edison](/people/thomas-edison)’s laboratories and the Naval Consulting Board turned to naval detection, smoke, and chemical-industrial problems of the U.S. war effort. This is a dated mobilisation of a private lab, not a claim that Edison invented poison gas.

## Context

Phenol and other chemical bottlenecks were real. Military-industrial conversion has welfare costs even when framed as defence.

Thomas Edison is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Navy Edison file and ETHW wartime notes independently place the lab in 1917–18 naval work.

Official or archival record: Naval History and Heritage Command — Edison file (https://www.history.navy.mil/research/library/research-guides/z-files/zb-files/zb-files-e/edison-thomas-alva.html; U.S. Navy).

## Significance

Wartime-industrial path. Medium confidence on humanitarian sign; high on the mobilisation itself.

Mobilisation is not the same as a war crime file. Do not invent one.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1917–18 Edison lab naval/chemical war work. Not established: a named casualty series from an Edison-designed weapon in this catalog.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
