# Edison opens the West Orange laboratory complex in New Jersey

Date: 1887

## The fact

In 1887 [Edison](/people/thomas-edison) established a larger laboratory and manufacturing complex at West Orange, New Jersey, succeeding Menlo Park as his principal works. The National Park Service now preserves the site.

## Context

Phonograph manufacture, ore milling experiments, and later motion pictures used the same campus. Labour, fire, and management are later Facts.

Thomas Edison is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

NPS Edison NHP and Rutgers Edison Papers independently date the West Orange laboratory.

Official or archival record: Thomas Edison National Historical Park — history (https://www.nps.gov/edis/learn/historyculture/index.htm; U.S. National Park Service).

## Significance

Industrial research-scale path. High confidence on the site.

A campus is not a patent. Keep products on their own rows.

## What is established and what is not

Established: West Orange laboratory from 1887 under Edison. Not established: that every product of the twentieth century was invented there.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
