# Federal officers clear Lafayette Square before a Trump church photo appearance

## The fact

On 1 June 2020 federal and other officers used chemical munitions and physical force to clear Lafayette Square and surrounding streets of racial-justice protesters shortly before [President Trump](/people/mig-donald-trump) walked to St. John’s Church for a photo holding a Bible. A later IG report disputed some operational details; it did not unwrite the clearance or the photo.

## Context

Attorney General Barr was on-site in reports. Park Police, Secret Service, and other units participated. The Mayor of Washington objected. Trump is a direct contributor to the photo appearance he sought; command of specific munitions is shared with federal police leadership. The death of George Floyd is another person’s crime, not this Fact.

Donald Trump did not act alone on every file. Congress, courts, agencies, foreign counterparts, and later administrators share specific instruments. Office-holding is not automatic authorship of every downstream welfare series. Allegation is not a completed judgment.

## Evidence and sources

U.S. Park Police/DOI materials, contemporaneous video, and independent reporting record the clearance and the photo. The DOJ IG later reviewed. They do not convert the hour into a unique national protest-rights coefficient without a series.

Established: Lafayette Square was cleared with force on 1 June 2020 before Trump’s church photo. Not established: that [Barr](/people/william-barr) personally ordered every munition, or that a unique national homicide series moved that hour.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, a court that vacated the instrument, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit. The score must not treat George Floyd’s murder as Trump’s act, or treat a later IG hedge as proof the square was not cleared.
