# Ilhan Omar begins service in the U.S. House

Date: 2019

[Ilhan Omar](/people/ilhan-omar) began serving in the U.S. House of Representatives in January 2019 as the representative for Minnesota's 5th Congressional District. Her official House biography says her election made her the first African refugee to become a member of Congress, the first woman of color to represent Minnesota and one of the first two Muslim-American women elected to Congress. This is a career and identity event, not an adverse action.
