In 1885 [Tesla](/people/nikola-tesla) left Edison Machine Works in New York after a short employment. Later popular accounts claim an unpaid $50,000 redesign bonus. Primary payroll evidence for that specific figure is weak. The split itself is documented enough to store as an employment Fact with medium confidence on motive.

## Context

Edison’s DC shop and Tesla’s AC ideas were already diverging. A colourful bonus legend is not a contract. Independent biographies disagree on the dollar story while agreeing Tesla did not stay. Do not print $50,000 as a Factrail count.

Nikola Tesla is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
