# Tesla lives on unpaid hotel credit in later New York years

Date: 1934

## The fact

In his later New York years [Tesla](/people/nikola-tesla) lived in hotels, including the New Yorker, with chronic unpaid bills. ETHW records financial difficulty after early patents expired. Smithsonian independently describes the reclusive hotel period ending in 1943.

## Context

Westinghouse had at times quietly paid room costs in earlier years; that patronage is not a pension statute. Do not treat pigeons as a welfare indicator. Do not treat hotel poverty as proof that AC never paid anyone — Westinghouse and utilities captured the rents.

Nikola Tesla is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

IEEE/ETHW and Smithsonian Magazine independently describe the late hotel poverty.

Official or archival record: Engineering and Technology History Wiki — Nikola Tesla (https://ethw.org/Nikola_Tesla; IEEE / ETHW).

## Significance

Livelihood path. High confidence on unpaid hotel living; medium on any one night’s ledger.

A hotel folio is not a motor. Keep 1888 gains and 1930s bills on separate rows.

## What is established and what is not

Established: later-life hotel residence with unpaid bills and expired core patents. Not established: a complete debt table, or that poverty uniquely proves a stolen-invention plot.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
