# Tesla Motors takes the surname as a car-company brand, flattening the historical engineer into a platform

Date: 2003

## The fact

In 2003 a Delaware electric-vehicle company took the name Tesla Motors, later Tesla, Inc. The historical [Nikola Tesla](/people/nikola-tesla) is the namesake, not a founder. This Fact stores later brand flattening, not an 1888 motor.

## Context

The museum in Belgrade holds the archive. A car firm’s trademark is a different instrument.

Nikola Tesla is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

The Tesla Museum remains the archival home. Smithsonian’s life essay independently describes how later popular memory detaches from the dated patents.

Official or archival record: Nikola Tesla Museum — Belgrade (https://tesla-museum.org/en/home/; Nikola Tesla Museum, Belgrade).

## Significance

Brand-concentration path.

A trademark is not a patent of 1888. Keep [Elon Musk](/people/elon-musk) as a stub relation, not as a laboratory assistant.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 2003 Tesla Motors naming after Nikola Tesla. Not established: that Tesla designed lithium-ion drivetrains, or that the car firm is the 1888 Westinghouse licence.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
