# Tesla Electric Light and Manufacturing in Rahway fails and Tesla works as a labourer

Date: 1886

## The fact

In 1886 [Tesla](/people/nikola-tesla)’s Tesla Electric Light and Manufacturing Company in Rahway, New Jersey, produced arc-lamp patents and then passed out of his control. Smithsonian’s biography records a subsequent period of poorly paid manual labour, including ditch digging at about two dollars a day. This Fact stores unpaid and diverted labour, not a personality of saintly poverty.

## Context

The 1887 Tesla Electric Company is a later recovery. Do not merge Rahway failure into the unpaid [Edison](/people/thomas-edison)-bonus legend. They are different instruments.

Nikola Tesla is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

IEEE/ETHW dates the 1886 arc-lamp company. Smithsonian Magazine’s Tesla life independently describes the labour interval after the firm was taken.

Official or archival record: Engineering and Technology History Wiki — Nikola Tesla (https://ethw.org/Nikola_Tesla; IEEE / ETHW).

## Significance

Labour-waste path. High confidence on the failed company; medium on any particular wage anecdote.

Unpaid labour is stored here. Do not launder it into a cute anecdote of persistence.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Rahway Tesla Electric Light company 1886 and Tesla’s loss of control. Not established: a complete wage series, or that ditch digging uniquely caused later Niagara.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
