# Tesla releases Westinghouse royalty claims during the company’s refinancing

Date: 1897

## The fact

In the 1890s [Tesla](/people/nikola-tesla) relinquished royalty rights on the Westinghouse polyphase patents so the company could refinance. ETHW records that tearing up the contract left him with fewer laboratory resources. This Fact stores the waiver, not a reconstructed billion-dollar series.

## Context

The 1888 licence is the prior improving row. A lump-sum or cancelled royalty is a different instrument. Popular arithmetic that Tesla ‘would have been the richest man’ is not established here.

Nikola Tesla is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

IEEE/ETHW and Smithsonian Magazine independently describe the royalty sacrifice during Westinghouse’s financial difficulty.

Official or archival record: Engineering and Technology History Wiki — Nikola Tesla (https://ethw.org/Nikola_Tesla; IEEE / ETHW).

## Significance

Income-from-invention path. Medium-high confidence that a royalty release occurred; low on any particular later dollar counterfactual.

A cancelled clause is not Niagara. Do not invent a billionaire.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Tesla released Westinghouse royalty claims in the 1890s refinancing. Not established: a unique fortune he would otherwise have collected, or a complete royalty ledger in this catalog.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
