# Tesla publicises a directed-energy ‘teleforce’ or death-ray as a defensive weapon

Date: 1934

## The fact

In the 1930s [Tesla](/people/nikola-tesla) repeatedly told the press he had a defensive directed-energy device, often called a death ray or teleforce. Britannica’s later-life summary and Smithsonian’s biography independently place these claims in his New York hotel period. No operational weapon is established in the sources cited here.

## Context

Interwar air-war fear made superweapon talk saleable. It does not invent a Tesla-built casualty series, and it does not dump New York’s electric chair onto him.

Nikola Tesla is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

Britannica and Smithsonian Magazine independently record the late weapon claims as part of the unsupported later file.

Official or archival record: Britannica — Nikola Tesla (https://www.britannica.com/biography/Nikola-Tesla; Encyclopaedia Britannica).

## Significance

Weapon-publicity path. High confidence that the interviews occurred; low on a working beam.

A press ray is not Niagara. Do not convert interviews into a war-crime file.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1930s teleforce/death-ray publicity by Tesla. Not established: a deployed Tesla beam weapon, or any named battlefield death from it in this catalog.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
