# Time magazine’s Tesla cover hardens a lone-genius story that crowds out Westinghouse engineers

Date: 1931

## The fact

On 20 July 1931 Time magazine featured [Tesla](/people/nikola-tesla) on the cover at seventy-five. The honour is public speech. It is stored because later cult memory treats him as the unique author of electrification and erases Westinghouse engineers and Ferraris.

## Context

Edison’s 1929 jubilee is a related flattening on another page. Tesla cooperated with birthday publicity. Polarisation here is credit-concentration, not a party system.

Nikola Tesla is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

## Evidence and sources

IEEE/ETHW records the celebrity-wizard press image. Smithsonian’s life essay independently describes fame mixed with unbuilt claims.

Official or archival record: Engineering and Technology History Wiki — Nikola Tesla (https://ethw.org/Nikola_Tesla; IEEE / ETHW).

## Significance

Credit-concentration path. High confidence on the 1931 cover moment as reception.

A cover is not Adams Station. Store flattening without inventing a conspiracy.

## What is established and what is not

Established: 1931 Time cover and birthday publicity. Not established: that the cover cancelled the 1888 patents’ industrial use, or that Tesla ordered later internet cults.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.
