## The fact

In 1901 [Tesla](/people/nikola-tesla) obtained J.P. Morgan financing and began Wardenclyffe at Shoreham, Long Island, with Stanford White as architect. Morgan’s commercial object was transatlantic wireless telegraphy. Tesla’s published ambition included worldwide power. The tower never became an operating utility.

## Context

Marconi’s December 1901 transatlantic ‘S’ undercut the communications market Tesla had sold. Expanding the tower beyond the contracted product is the welfare issue stored here. It is not a cartoon of Morgan as a unique saboteur of free energy.

Nikola Tesla is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
