# Mihály Varga becomes central bank governor

In March 2025 former finance minister [Mihály Varga](/people/mihaly-varga) succeeded [György Matolcsy](/people/gyorgy-matolcsy) as governor of the Hungarian National Bank, appointed by the president on the prime minister's proposal for six years. On starting work on 4 March he pledged consistent and disciplined monetary policy aimed at strengthening credibility and trust.
