# Vespasian initiates the Flavian Amphitheatre on the site of Nero’s lake

## The fact

In the early 70s, conventionally headed 72, [Vespasian](/people/vespasian) began the Flavian Amphitheatre on the drained [lake](/people/kari-lake) of Nero’s Golden House, as Suetonius prints and the archaeological park now presents. Alföldy’s reconstructed inscription names spoils of war.

It is one event.

## Context

Parco archeologico del Colosseo and Suetonius independently locate the Flavian building. Do not treat a 21st-century ticket as 72.

Vespasian’s documented role is bounded by other offices and collaborators named in the sources below. Sharing a field with them is not a reason to drop a documented act, and it is not a reason to assign later consequences done in the name after death.

Conventional years are 9–79 CE. Surviving public files are later Suetonius, Tacitus, Josephus, coins, and encyclopedia pages. Vespasian did not typeset those later English pages. Dates here are received historical years.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Vespasian began the amphitheatre. Not established: that he attended a 80 opening, or a unique labour-mortality series for the crews.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.

Established here: a sourced, dated public instrument with a named contribution by Vespasian.
