# Vespasian redirects the Temple tax as the fiscus Judaicus after 70

Date: 71

## The fact

After 70 [Vespasian](/people/vespasian) ordered that the former Jerusalem Temple tax of two drachmas be paid to the Capitoline cult, as Josephus War 7.218 prints it.

It is one event.

## Context

Josephus and Britannica independently describe the Jewish tax. The Capitol had burned in 69; reconstruction used the diverted funds as later historians tell it. This is not the urine-tax anecdote as a second copy.

Vespasian’s documented role is bounded by other offices and collaborators named in the sources below. Sharing a field with them is not a reason to drop a documented act, and it is not a reason to assign later consequences done in the name after death.

Conventional years are 9–79 CE. Surviving public files are later Suetonius, Tacitus, Josephus, coins, and encyclopedia pages. Vespasian did not typeset those later English pages. Dates here are received historical years.

Named person as heading of the dated public instrument. Later editors, museums, printers, or offices share publication. Complex where later carriers are the surviving public file.

## Evidence and sources

Perseus Josephus and Britannica independently describe Vespasian’s Jewish tax after 70.

Official or archival record: Perseus — Josephus, The Jewish War (https://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.01.0148; Perseus Digital Library / Tufts University).

## Significance

Rights-harm and fiscal-extraction path. High confidence on the instrument as received.

## What is established and what is not

Established: Vespasian imposed the Jewish tax after 70. Not established: a unique later conversion coefficient from this levy.

What would change the picture: a contradictory original with a different date or name, or a measured series that can be argued, with lag and alternatives, as a consequence of this instrument rather than of later institutions.

The date is the date of this instrument, not a licence to back-date every later harm or benefit.

Established here: a sourced, dated public instrument with a named contribution by Vespasian.

They are not a public rating.

The driver `protection-of-minority-rights` is attached because the mechanism named in Significance follows from this instrument, not because a standing list of welfare headings needed another tick. Vespasian did not file a later UNESCO form, a later Loeb colophon, or a later museum label as a personal act. A portrait or conventional bust is not this mechanism. Allegation, reconstruction, and established occurrence stay distinct.
